2018 IU MEN'S
SOCCER GUIDE

After falling one game shy of capturing the National Championship, the IU men’s soccer team continues its Quest for Nine. After graduating key players, while losing some to the MLS draft, the Hoosiers still have a roster capable of another deep postseason run. Here’s a look at the players and coaches, their past and how they can contribute this season.

DEFENDERS

JORDAN KLEYN
Position: Defender
Year: Junior
Hometown: Plainfield, Indiana
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Kleyn, who was the Indiana High School Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014-15, has battled injuries as a Hoosier so far, but has been effective when he’s been on the field. He appeared in seven matches his freshman season, but had to redshirt his sophomore year due to injury. Last season, Kleyn played 14 games and started six while still battling injury. He recorded four shots, with two being on goal, but made contributions on the defensive end — helping Muse shutout 18 teams and allow only seven goals. If Kleyn can stay injury free, the Hoosiers will have a strong asset in the backline.

JACOB MEIER
Position: Defender
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Shakopee, Minnesota
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Meier redshirted his freshman season, but, despite not stepping on the field in cream and crimson colors, his recruiting resume shows promise as a young defender. Ranked as a three-star recruit by Top Drawer Soccer, Meier was ranked as the No. 4 player in the Midwest region and No. 24 defender in the country. In his four years with the Minnesota Thunder Academy, Meier started every minute of every match and was a team captain all four years. As he gets more comfortable within Coach Yeagley’s system, the defender could help the Hoosiers’ stingy defense.

A.J. PALAZZOLO
Position: Defender
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri
Goals: 0
Assists: 2
Palazzolo, who was named as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America National High School Player of the Year in 2015, has not seen the field in a year after redshirting last season, but was productive in his inaugural campaign. In 2016 with the Hoosiers, Palazzolo appeared in 10 matches off the bench and recorded two assists. One of his assists came in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal against Wisconsin, when IU was down 1-0, to tie up the game. Being eligible again this season, he can prove effective as another valuable substitute off the bench.

TIMMY MEHL
Position: Defender
Year: Senior
Hometown: Manhattan Beach, California
Goals: 3
Assists: 2
After redshirting his freshman season, Mehl has steadily increased his role on the defensive end. From coming off the bench in six games his first season, to playing in 17 — starting 10 — his second season, to then starting all 25 games in IU’s title-match run a year ago. He found the net three times last year to go along with one assist and a total of seven points. Entering his senior season, the 6-foot-1 defender would want nothing more than to lead his team to the championship, something IU came so close to capturing a year ago.

JACK MAHER
Position: Defender
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Caseyville, Illinois
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Deemed a four-star recruit by Top Drawer Soccer, Maher was ranked as the No. 4 defender in the nation. He also played tournaments in Slovakia, Portugal and the Czech Republic with the U.S. Under-18 National Team, helping the team win the International Vaclav Jezek tournament in the Czech Republic. With a solid defense already, Maher will have to work his way into playing time for the Hoosiers in his freshman season.

ANDREW GUTMAN
Position: Defender
Year: Senior
Hometown: Hinsdale, Illinois
Goals: 9
Assists: 8
Like Moore, Gutman found his footing in his first season with IU, except Gutman didn’t redshirt his freshman year. He was named Second-Team All-Big Ten in his first two years after having one goal and at least one assist both seasons. However, last season the defender found the net seven times and racked up four assists to give him First-Team All-Big Ten honors. His aggressiveness on the attack and solid defending make him one of IU’s most complete players. Expect his senior year to replicate much of his first three seasons.

RECE BUCKMASTER
Position: Defender/mid-fielder
Year: Senior
Hometown: Auburn, Indiana
Goals: 1
Assists: 9
One of the main reasons why IU had arguably the top defense in the country last season was due to the defensive play of Buckmaster. In 2017, the Hoosiers led the NCAA in shutouts with 18 and goals allowed with 7, as Buckmaster started in 23 games in the midfield. He has only scored a single goal in his career, which came all the way back in his freshman season, but in 2017, he was tied for second on the team with six assists. Buckmaster’s defensive ability is something IU will rely on heavily this season. In his senior season, Buckmaster will play a pivotal role for the Hoosiers once again on the defensive side of the ball.

ISAAC SAROSY
Position: Defender
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Fair Oaks, Indiana
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
The Fair Oaks native was a three-star recruit and the No. 104 player in the IMG Academy Top 150 by Top Drawer Soccer. Sarosy started all 36 matches with the Indiana Fire Development Academy and was with the club during the last two seasons. After committing back on May 15, 2017, Sarosy has a chance to be a valuable defender for the Hoosiers in the future.

DANIEL MUNIE
Position: Defender
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Maryland Heights, Missouri
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Heading into his first season as a Hoosier, Munie will be joined by one of his teammates, Jack Maher. Munie was ranked the No. 18 player in the Heartland region by Top Drawer Soccer and was a part of a back line with his club team, Saint Louis FC, that recorded eight shutouts and was second out of 76 teams in goals against average at 0.615. He will look to keep the tradition of strong IU defenses alive with the rest of the incoming freshman defenders.

JOHN BANNEC
Position: Defender
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Bloomington, Indiana
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Another product of Bloomington High School South, Bannec redshirted his freshman season after scoring 13 goals to go with 14 assists in his senior year. Bannec won four sectional titles, two regional titles and a Conference Indiana championship during his time in high school. In the fall, Bannec could see some meaningful minutes within the strong IU defense off the bench.

MIDFIELDERS

Avatar

TREVOR SWARTZ
Position: Midfielder
Year: Senior
Hometown: Cameron Park, California
Goals: 11
Assists: 11
IU’s success last season was due in large part to its orchestrator in the middle of the field — Trevor Swartz. His team-leading eight assists and 16 total points helped the Hoosiers put points on the board en route to their 18-1-6 record. He scored four goals last season to give him 11 for his IU career. He also has 11 career assists. IU will benefit from having Swartz in the middle of the field for one last season. With the taste of a championship on the tip of his tongue, expect Swartz to do much of the same this year in hopes of claiming the big prize.

JUSTIN RENNICKS
Position: Midfielder/forward
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Hamilton, Massachusetts
Goals: 0
Assists: 1
The 5-foot-11 sophomore saw himself inserted into nine matches this past season, but was limited throughout due to injury. His highlight of the year came against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, when he assisted IU’s fourth and final goal to shutout the Buckeyes 4-0. Barring injury, Rennicks can be a solid substitute to either help control the tempo in the midfield, or be a threat at the striker position.

CORY THOMAS
Position: Midfielder
Year: Senior
Hometown: Corydon, Indiana
Goals: 8
Assists: 4
Similar to Mehl, Thomas redshirted his freshman year and then ascended each year as a more important part of the offense. He played five matches his freshman year, to 17 matches off the bench his sophomore year, to playing all 25 — starting 20 — last season. He netted seven goals, including three game-winners, had three assists and scored a total of 17 points last season. He was also named to the College Cup all-tournament team. Thomas, along with Swartz, will look to dominate the middle of field during his final campaign.

AUSTIN PANCHOT
Position: Midfielder
Year: Senior
Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri
Goals: 8
Assists: 5
To join Swartz and Thomas as the experienced midfielders, Panchot could start or come off the bench this season, depending on Yeagley’s game plan. He played all 25 games for the Hoosiers last season and started 16 of them. He totaled four goals and four assists in 2017, which gives him eight goals and five assists in his IU career heading into his last year. His four assists last season compared to just one in his first two years shows how much Panchot has grown in distributing the ball and making the right pass. It won’t matter if he starts or comes off the bench, Panchot will be a reliable midfielder for the Hoosiers.

FRANCESCO MOORE
Position: Midfielder
Year: Senior
Hometown: Highland Park, Illinois
Goals: 3
Assists: 4
Unlike many of the names on this roster, Moore found a starting role with IU in his freshman year after redshirting. He started all 21 games in 2015 and took nine shots, but never found the back of the net. He had two assists in 2016, but it wasn’t until last season where he found the back of the net for the first time. Well, actually three times. Those three goals went along with his two assists to total eight points on the year. The 5-foot-10 senior will add more composure and control to the experienced midfield positions the Hoosiers have.

GRIFFIN DORSEY
Position: Midfielder/forward
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Evergreen, Colorado
Goals: 3
Assists: 6
Dorsey started in all 23 matches in which he appeared last season — he missed two matches after getting called up to the U.S. Under-18 National Team for a pair of friendly matches — and had a stellar season. Totaling three goals, six assists and 12 points, Dorsey racked up the accolades. He was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Second-Team Freshman Best XI, College Soccer News All-Freshman Second Team, Second-Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He will look to be just as productive this season to help the Hoosiers return to the promised land.

JOE SCHMIDT
Position: Midfielder
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Bainbridge Township, Ohio
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Coming out of high school, Schmidt was ranked a three-star recruit, the No. 7 player in the Great Lakes region and the No. 45 midfielder in the country by Top Drawer Soccer, but redshirted his first season in Bloomington after attending summer classes and training on campus. He’s been a member of the Under-14 and Under-15 U.S Youth National teams while also being a four-year starter with the USSDA Internationals Academy and was captain of the Under-16 and Under-18 teams. He started each game in the spring and should be a key contributor in the midfield come the fall season.

JEREMIAH GUTJAHR
Position: Midfielder
Year: Senior
Hometown: Bloomington, Indiana
Goals: 1
Assists: 2
After participating with the U.S Under-20 National Team and earning all-Big Ten Preseason Honors, 2017 was supposed to be Gutjahr’s opportunity to be a major part of the team’s success. But his season came to an end after 10 consecutive starts when he suffered a knee injury against Evansville. He won’t be asked to carry a heavy load on offense, but Gutjahr brings experience and reliability in the midfield. The Bloomington native, who attended Bloomington High School North, now has a chance in his final season as a Hoosier to be one of the key players on a team that’ll look to make a strong push for a ninth national title.

This season will mark the beginning of a new era within IU men’s soccer for the Yeagley name. Ben will be the third Yeagley to represent the Hoosiers as his grandfather, Jerry, was the head coach from 1973-2003 and won six national titles. His father, Todd, is the current head coach for the Hoosiers and was a player himself, and won three Big Ten Conference titles. Coming out of high school, Ben was named the 2017 Herald Times Player of the Year after totaling 22 goals and 10 assists in his senior season. He owns the Bloomington High School South goals and assists career records with 44 goals and 29 assists. With a loaded midfield in 2018, Ben will be a key piece for the Hoosiers in the next few seasons.

After redshirting his first season on campus, Glass provided a spark off the bench for the Hoosiers in 2017. He appeared in 18 matches and earned a pair of starts. Glass had one goal — a match winner against Northwestern — and four assists on the season. Coming out of high school, he was named one of the top-150 players in the class of 2016 by Top Drawer Soccer. Glass started every game in the spring season and will be a cornerstone piece for the Hoosiers the next three seasons.

Ranked a three-star recruit and the No. 7 player in the Heartland Region by Top Drawer Soccer when coming out of high school, Barks redshirted his freshman season as a Hoosier. He played four seasons with St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club in the U.S Soccer Development Acadamy and helped lead the club to a Missouri State Cup Championship in 2012. Barks also participated in an elite training program with Arsenal Football Club, sending him to London to train and play games in 2013. Barks will provide depth for the Hoosiers in the midfield this season.

THOMAS WARR
Position: Forward
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Zionsville, Indiana
Goals: 2

Expect more minutes from the sophomore forward this year. Primarily serving as a substitute last season, Warr played in 17 games, but started just four. He scored two goals, assisted on three and totaled seven points on the year. After fellow forward Mason Toye left for MLS, a starting striker spot has opened up and Warr will be a top contender to fill it. After being ranked the No. 17 forward in the country by Top Drawer Soccer and finishing fifth in the entire country in goals per game coming entering his freshman season, Warr will hope to take Toye’s spot as the team’s leading scorer, if given the opportunity.

Wittenbrink comes into Bloomington as an All-American honoree by the United Soccer Coaches and was named a three-star recruit by Top Drawer Soccer. In the 2017 High School All-America match, he showed off his potential by scoring a pair of goals, earning him MVP honors. Wittenbrink scored 68 goals and tallied 42 assists in 65 career matches. He had a huge senior season, scoring 39 goals with 17 assists and was the second-leading scorer in the nation in the Under-18 National League last season. Wittenbrink has a chance to be a major offensive force for the Hoosiers in the years to come.

Despite appearing in three matches as a true freshman off the bench in 2016, Black redshirted the 2017 season and was named Academic All-Big Ten in the process. He came to Bloomington after being named an NSCAA All-American and First-Team All-State as a senior in high school. Black was also the OCC Player of the Year and Ohio Central District Player of the Year after scoring 27 goals during his senior season. Black claimed the Dublin Jerome High School record for the most career goals with 52 and total career points with 123. He should see some more playing time this upcoming season as a key piece off the bench for the Hoosiers.

Caulfield hasn’t seen much action as a Hoosier thus far after redshirting his freshman season and not seeing any action the following year. However, Caulfield saw the field for the first time as a Hoosier at a pivotal point last season as he got subbed into the game for penalty kicks in the Big Ten Championship game against Wisconsin. Even though the result wasn't what he had hope for — allowing four goals as IU lost the penalty-kick shootout 4-2 — Caulfield gained valuable experience in goal and will serve as a reliable backup to Trey Muse this season.

In 25 games, Muse led the NCAA with 18 shutouts, a .903 save percentage and in goalie minutes played with more than 2,400. TODD YEAGLEY
Head Coach
Season with IU: 10th
After taking the head coaching job with IU in 2009, Yeagley has continued the tradition of success within the IU men’s soccer program. Minus his first season, he has coached the Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament eight straight seasons, winning the NCAA Championship in 2012. His overall record with IU so far is 109-51-35. After coming up short last season, there’s no doubt Yeagley will set his team up with the goal of repeating the success of 2012.

Robson was hired as an assistant coach in 2014, but took on the role of recruiting coordinator just last season. He was a member of IU’s 2003 and 2004 national title teams and graduated with a degree in communications and broadcasting. In his tenure as a coach, the team’s record is 55-13-21. Last season, Robson and the rest of the IU coaches were named the Men's Midwest Region Staff of the Year for Division I Institutions.
